Gates Mills is proud to be a part of the Mayfield City School District, an award-winning school district that boasts a five-star overall rating from the Ohio Department of Education. This is the highest rating given, and Mayfield City Schools is one of the largest and most diverse schools in Cuyahoga County with such a distinction. Serving about 4,000 students across the communities of Gates Mills, Highland Heights, Mayfield Heights, and Mayfield Village, the district offers a broad spectrum of educational programs across four grade K-5 neighborhood elementary schools, a grade 6-8 middle school, and a grade 9-12 high school.
Gates Mills Elementary School (GMES), located in the heart of the Village center, serves Gates Mills families and offers a unique and personalized educational experience, typically with just one class per grade and an average class size of 16 students. GMES was one of only four (out of 164) elementary schools in Cuyahoga County to receive a 2023 five star rating from the Ohio Department of Education. Its small school environment allows its experienced teachers to provide individualized student learning experiences. For example, in 2023 the school exceeded the Ohio Department of Education maximum performance index score, putting it in the top 2 percent of elementary schools in the state.
Beyond its academic accolades, GMES offers a diverse student body and wide-range of curriculum options. Students regularly engage in STEM and project-based learning where students get to experience topics liked coding, 3D printing, robotics, virtual reality, and other hands-on learning experiences.
After graduating from GMES, the next stops are Mayfield Middle School and High School. In 2023, Mayfield Middle School was recognized as an Association for Middle Level School of Distinction for its exemplary learning practices. These practices include teamed learning models that promote collaboration and provide teachers the opportunity to flex the traditional learning schedule and encourage interdisciplinary learning. For example, Mayfield Middle School Students can engage in diverse elective options like ceramics, robotics, videography, and podcasting alongside their core curriculum courses.
Mayfield High School has been named one of the best high schools in America by Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and the Washington Post, and one of the best public high schools in the Cleveland area by Niche.com. It offers 28 AP courses—one of the highest in Cuyahoga County—and has been recognized for providing rich educational opportunities like self-directed learning, capstone projects, and high-impact internships. As a result of the innovative educational opportunities provided to its students, in 2022 and 2023 Mayfield City Schools hosted superintendents and educational leaders from across Ohio and the nation interested in learning about the district’s Portrait of a Mayfield Wildcat and All-Access Learning models.
Beyond K-12, the district also offers a preschool program, and consortium programs to meet the diverse range of student needs. Its consortium programs include Excel T.E.C.C., which provides vocational, technical, and job skill training to high school students, and Cuyahoga East Vocational Education Program Consortium (CEVEC), which helps to prepare older students with a range of developmental disabilities for work and independent living.
